Dental Implants
Here at Woburn Sands Dental Practice we are very proud to offer our patients the latest dental implants for replacing missing teeth.
Whilst we also offer treatments like crowns, bridges and cosmetic dentures, implants are considered by many to be the gold-standard in tooth replacement. So for the most natural-feeling, long-term smile restoration, we recommend considering this innovative technology that replaces the tooth in its entirety, from root to crown.
What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants are high-quality titanium replacements for the tooth root, designed to fit where a tooth root used to be, eventually bonding with the jawbone to form an incredibly strong base for a dental crown. They are fitted during a surgical procedure which is planned with precision, to ensure the highest chance of success.
What makes Dental Implants the gold standard in Tooth Restoration?
As well as providing a very secure base for the crowns that replace the teeth, implants also reduce jawbone loss that occurs when teeth are lost. This helps reduce the ageing affect missing teeth can have on your looks, and also helps the surrounding teeth remain in place, avoiding movement and misalignment.
Are Dental Implants right for you?
Implants are the closest thing to natural teeth currently available within modern dentistry. Because the titanium implant bonds with the jawbone, it effectively becomes part of the body and for that reason, is incredibly secure. Dental implants are a fantastic tooth restoration option for anybody looking to replace one or several teeth, or even complete arches of teeth. Implants could also be a great option for you if you struggle with traditional dentures being loose or giving you an uncomfortable ‘full mouth’ feel.
Dental Implant Surgery
Dental implants are made of three parts: the titanium root, the abutment and the dental crown. Implants are not suitable for everyone, a detailed consultation is necessary before a treatment plan can be agreed. The treatment itself is completed over a period of months, so it is important to discuss the procedure and treatment implications with you during your consultation. If a treatment plan is agreed, we will book you in for your implant placement. If you need bone grafting, this will be done before your placement appointment.
When you come in for your fitting we will provide a local anaesthetic to ensure you are completely comfortable and free from pain throughout the treatment. Once this worked, we will place the implant(s). You will then be given specific care instructions for the next few weeks, although your implants will take up to 6 months to heal beneath the gum line. As the implant and jawbone bond, we may add abutments or that could wait until the final appointment, depending on your individual healing status. During your final appointment your permanent crowns will be fitted and your new smile will be complete!
